Overview:
The purpose of this project is to train teachers in the planning and practice of lessons that used Discipline-Based Art Education. It provides the skills to facilitate elementary student learning about women’s studies using primary sources from the United States Library of Congress. This project brings attention to an understudied area of elementary social studies education needing classroom coverage.
2019 Workshop
The professional development opportunity in October 2019 consisted of two parts. The morning session informed participants about three elements to the lesson development experience: content, instruction, and resources. Expert speakers facilitated these sessions about critical views of women’s history (Kyle Ciani, Ph.D), Disciplined Art as Education (DBAE) of Art Education (James Laney, Ph.D), and an orientation to the Library of Congress website and analysis strategies for Teaching with Primary Sources (Judith Bee). The second part of the Teaching with Primary Sources workshop required the participants to construct a DBAE lesson plan that used primary sources to facilitate student learning about critical views of women's’ history.
2020 Workshop
A second Teaching with Primary Sources workshop was conducted during October 2020. A participant from the 2019 workshop used her learning from that experience to facilitate the workshop other teaching professionals. In assigned groups, participants used information from the presentation to create a lesson plan. A template was generated and used to structure the lesson plans in order to maintain consistency between each group. All the lesson plans can be accessed using the lesson plan tab above.
2022 Workshops
During the spring of 2022, a couple of workshops are being planned for a Midwest urban school district. The project theme will be the use of art and primary sources to teach about women’s studies and feminism. During the fall of 2022, two workshops will be conducted. The first workshop is scheduled for October 2022 and the second in November 2022. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in discussions, follow presentations, and create a lesson plan. All lessons will be accessible in the lesson plan tab above.
